Content, content, content

  • Going to start adding in the questions that came fom the call I did on July 5th. This will be the first of a series. You can listen to the whole 1-3/4 hour call at The Call Replay.

A very important question that was asked was about content.

In blogging content is KING. You can do everything to generate traffic but if you don’t have content that people want to read your blog will be worthless.

    A few easy rules.

    • You should have 150-250 words per post minimum
    • With a few exceptions it should be targeted
    • Take the time to run a spell check on it

No length is a big question. A blog post does not have to be a huge long epistle (although it can be.) You don’t need a book to get people to read. Actually, huge long posts can be a turnoff to people. Short summaries of ideas seem to work best.

Target your posts. If you are going to write about 3 different things create 3 posts. This will help each post to be targeted to one topic and make it much more search engine friendly.

You can talk about a variety of topics on a blog but i f you are going to do that create categories for the topics. That way if you are writing about anxiety problems, depression, self improvement and 3 other similar topics I as a reader can find the topic I want easily.

If I am interested in anxiety make it easy for me to find those articles. I may not care to read about depression or vice versa.

Doing a quick check on your spelling and grammar can make it much easier to read and the easier it is the more likely you are to get a response and show your expertise. Will you miss one or two occasionally? If you are like me you will but a quick proof read always helps.

Todays question is – How do I add You Tube to my blog?

Adding a video can be quite easy to do for your blog. You can get quite a few plugins that will help you to make this easier. My favorite is Viper’s Video Quicktags.

Getting a plugin though it may make it easier is not necessary (at least for You Tube).

When you find a video at You Tube there are 2 links you can use. See the image below.
    You Tube

You will see that there is one called url and one called embed.

You can just copy and paste the embed url into your post and you will have a video in your post.

One caveat – If you use the visual editor to write your posts you will want to click on the code link before you add the embed code.

Now if you are using things other than You Tube then I would recommend getting a plugin as they can add the code for you to embed a variety of videos including your own.

    How to monetize your blog?

Going to start adding in the questions that came fom the call I did on July 5th. This will be the first of a series. You can listen to the whole 1-3/4 hour call at The Call Replay.

Today’s question is another frequent one. Was asked in multiple forms on the call but the gist of it is -How can I monetize my blog?

There are quite a few ways to do this but most fall into one of four categories.

Contextual advertising – Primary amongst this is Google Adsense. Add your code and the big G will deliver relevant ads to your site. If people click them you get paid so much per click. There are numerous others like Yahoo Publisher Network and many others.

CPA networks – CPA stands for cost per action. These are quite often lead generating items. People like mortgage brokers will pay x amount per lead that fills in their form. Depending on your topic this can be a lucrative way to generate income to your blog.

Affiliate networks – This is one I use quite often. You get a percentage of the sale for each person that buys a product from your recommendation. If you use this properly it can be a good source of revenue.

3rd Party Advertising – This can be done directly with someone paying you to have their ads on your blog or using a variety of networks available that find the advertisers for you.

Personally the best in my opinion is affiliate products or CPA because with the proper content even minimal traffic can generate you revenue. The other two depend on you having a fairly high traffic flow.

How do you create a response?

Going to start adding in the questions that came fom the call I did on July 5th. This will be the first of a series. You can listen to the whole 1-3/4 hour call at The Call Replay.

One of the other big questions that comes up frequently is creating a response from your readers. This can take quite a bit of time and effort.

One of the easiest ways is to ask people to comment.

If you don’t ask you will never get. If you notice quite frequently (like every post) I ask for feedback.

The other thing is to comment on other blogs. If you are participating in the conversation here or linking to here whether it be good, bad or indifferent the odds increase that I will be visiting and commenting back. This works well when the topics are similar.

It does me no good to go comment about knitting for this blog. Now if you talk about blogging or WordPress it makes sense for me to be in the conversation.

These are just a couple things you can do. Do make sure that when you do comment you are participating in the conversation and not spamming. You don’t have to agree but so be on topic and further the conversation.

And to follow my own advice (hey it does happen on occasion) if you have questions or comments feel free to post them or for questions you can click the survey box at the top.

This is a common question that comes up quite frequently.

First you control the blog if you host it. As long as you pay for your hosting your blog will stay on line. Having a portion of my business where someone else can just turn off the switch worries me.

Second – if you are actively working to get back links (and you should be) you will want those to go to a domain that you control. If you create a high PR site you have an asset you can sell.

Third – You can customize the site and add more plugins if you control the site. Even though you have choices with the other services you do limit your self.
