Todays question:

If I host a blogger blog or a wordpress blog on my own hosting account will I still have the same Page Rank as if it were hosted by blogger and wordpress?

Well this is a bit of a tough question because only Google knows what goes into your page rank. We get hints from results and what we see along with some of their patent filings but nobody but Google knows for sure and they try their best to keep it that way.

That being said for the most part your page rank is helped by incoming links and having the same linking to each type should generate the same page rank.

There is a big difference between hosting a Blogger blog and using the WordPress software on your own domain unless blogger has changed (I don’t stay up to date with blogger). You are still using their data base and software and it is primarily just a redirect when you host a blogger blog on your domain.

This leaves you open to them removing your blog at their discretion. Both Blogger and WordPress.com are not always affiliate friendly which is why I prefer if I am going to host it to use WordPress software on my site with my data base where I have complete control.

As always your questions and comments are welcomed.

Today’s question:

How do you get a blog submitted to different search engines

The best way is to let the search engines find you. Submitting your blog to the search engines is a waste of time in my opinion.

Create a back link from another site. If you don’t have another site you can use any of the various free sites (blogger, Wordpress.com, Squidoo, etc.) or even any active forum. This way the search engines find you which is always better than submissions.

This will get you indexed much more quickly than any submission.

Now that does not mean that I won’t add my blog feed to the various rss directories as this can be beneficial but I never submit them to Google, Yahoo, etc.

Today’s question:

What should the content of a blog be?

Sometimes questions don’t have a correct answer. This is one of them.

The content will depend on the purpose of your blog. The nice thing is that a blog can be about anything you want it to be.

When I ran a blog exchange I saw blogs on all different topics. Everything from Mommy blogs about their life and kids to affiliate marketers pre-selling a product to out and out porn blogs.

A blog is just a tool to easily create web content and you can use it in just about any way you can think of using it.

Now if you are looking to use a blog to make a profit the topics don’t necessarily change. I have seen blogs that are profitable that just talk about the family. Two women started a podcast where basically they sit at the kitchen table and talk about their families and what is going on with them. They got enough listeners that they were able to get a corporate sponsorship.

So ultimately the key is to find a topic that people are interested and if you get enough traffic to a targeted market. Then you can either pre-sell or find advertisers that want access to your target market.

Finding a topic and checking profitability will be the subject matter on the teleseminar I will be doing Saturday at 2pm edt. Make sure to stop back and get the information here later this week.

There are 5 major items to creating a profitable blog. Miss any of these and you will struggle to get going.

This is why there are 5 sections to WordPress Lessons. the first section will be open to everyone for free. See I feel it is important for you to know that my teaching method will work for you. So step 1 will be given live on Saturday at 2 pm edt. More details later in the week but mark your calendar now.

The steps are

  1. Niche research
  2. Setting up your blog
  3. Posting to your blog
  4. Generating traffic
  5. Testing and tweaking

Each of these are important but on Saturday we will discuss the first step which in my opinion is the one most often overlooked and kills most blogs before you even get started.

Make sure you are on the email update list to get the details later this week for the call on Saturday.

Not sure that the contest was clear as I have seen quite a few people join the mailing list, a few add comments and only one link back from their blog.

It is a 3 step process to be considered for the free admission to WordPress Lessons.

  1. Leave a comment on the contest post and answer the following – Why this course would help you and what you expect from it.
  2. Make sure you are signed up to the update list for this blog – You can do that in the upper right hand corner of the sidebar
  3. Link back to the contest post at http://wptutorial.com/blog/updates/wordpress-lesson-contest from your blog.

Hopefully this clears it up.

Today’s question:

When is it advisable to change the LOOK of the blog?

This is a good question but one with no right answer.

I don’t tend to change the look of my blog very often. There has to be a reason for me to change.

The look of your blog is part of your branding so I would not change it just to change it. If you do I would tend to do minor changes not major changes unless the theme wa quite frankly crap or causing problems.

As long as the theme is easy to read and displays properly then there is not a reason for it.

Now lets look at some reasons you would like to change your look.

  1. Your bored with it.
  2. You want to make it easier to read.
  3. You are doing a redesign on your business and want to match it.
  4. Your current theme is just “crap”

The most important thing to me is that my blog is easily readable. All of the great designs and super sharp design elements are not worthwhile if your blog is hard to read.

For me I am old and bald with bad eyes. Small type fonts and dark backgrounds tend to make blogs hard for me to read. If it is hard to read I am less likely to follow and read the blog no matter how great your content is or how sharp your design looks.

I just opened up WordPress Lessons and feel that coaching can make a huge difference for those that apply it.

One of the things I have decided to do is give away one spot to someone on my blog subscription list.

If you are not sure what WordPress Lessons is go check it out at

WordPress Lessons

There are three things you will need to do to have a chance to win a copy.

  1. Leave a comment below telling me why this would help you and what you expect from it.
  2. Make sure you are signed up to the subscription list for this blog. You must be signed up on the list at the time of the award.
  3. Make a blog post about this contest and link back to this post.

I will be reading all of the comments and will pick a winner on September 29th from all contestants. Entries must be placed by September 28th.

I look forward to seeing how you feel this would benefit you.

Today’s question:

What is the best LENGTH for a blog post, and how often is it most advantageous to post?

The first part of this question is impossible to answer definitively. For a simple guideline most blog posts should be at least 150 words. They can be a 1000 words too though.

It really depends on what it takes to cover the topic of the blog post and create an interesting post worth reading. If you can do that in a short post and cover the topic I think that is better as succinct information will tend to get you more followers. Just my opinion.

The second part of the questions is easy – the more the better.

I know a real smart ass answer sorry but that is me ;) .

It really depends on two factors. How competitive is your niche and how old is your blog.

The more competitive your niche the more often you should post. This can be once, twice, three times a day or more. If you look at some of the big blogs like Problogger you will see multiple posts every day. Trying to compete against them and posting once a day and you are spitting in the wind.

As a rule for a new blog I like to post at least daily and preferably twice a day to get them started. This will continue for the first few weeks and then may tail back to 3-5 times a week.

More important is to set a pattern of consistency. Readers like to know when to expect more information. If you post every week on Friday then your followers will begin to expect that.

The worst thing is to not be consistent in your posting. Post 4 times this week then 2 weeks later add another post. Just a good way to lose your readership in my opinion.

So pick a schedule and tend to stay with it. Your readers will appreciate it.

As always your questions and comments are welcomed.

WordPress Lessons just re-opened yesterday. Classes will begin in October and the structure will be the same as last time.

If you are on the waiting list you should have received an email yesterday but email being what it is and Aweber having the troubles they have over the last few days I decided to post here.

Until Saturday at 10 am the price will be the same as it was last time. After that the price will be going up by $50 but did not want anyone that had signed up to miss this discount because of the email problems.

Check out WordPress Lessons

The details for last night’s call are on the post below this one.

Have a great day.
