Today we continue the series on Google Webmaster Tools. Crawl errors lets you know what types of problems the Google bot is finding indexing your site. If they can’t find it they obviously can’t add it to their data base.

crawlerrors

This will show me what problems the spiders are having when crawling around, Now this site has quite a few pages not found but in checking deeper these are all from a forum I deleted a month ago that had previously been indexed.

Now had those pages not been something that I knew about ti would show me a problem with my site. This is very helpful for bloggers that have changed permalinks and are using a redirect plugin to be sure that it is working.

crawlerrors1

You can also see how the spiders are doing in the various mobile formats if you are using those on your blog.

Converting your blog to make it more accessible to mobile devices is something to consider. The various smart phones have increased the number of people accessing your blog content from these devices.

So knowing what Google sees when crawling your site can be helpful to fix problems. Next time I will get into the links and sitemaps sections.

Today we will look a bit deeper at what you can find out from the top queries section of Google Webmaster Tools. I clicked the more link on the dashboard below the top search queries and now it is time to see what we can learn.

queries

The top 10 are the same as what we saw in the dashboard but there is something quite interesting to be gleaned from this. The number one result despite being on page 2 (position 11) received over 1/3 of all the times this domain was shown in the search results.

(Guess doing this series has the chance of generating some search traffic here ;) ) It is obviously a highly searched term to have that high of a percentage of all of the times that this domain shows up in search results and still be on page 2. Now I know this is a topic worth spending time on.

If I can move this up to page 1 it should generate even more views.

The other item that shows up when you click the more link is the clickthrough rate.

clickthrough

Here you will see that the top item is wordpress user levels and the percentage of people clicking through is extremely high for a #3 listing. I have some thoughts as to why.

userlevels

In this case the first two items are from the WordPress codex and the odds are that quite a few people searching for this answer have already done a search at WordPress first. That makes this the first result for those people.

The thing that you can do though is to go check especially any of the items that are ranking high and not getting clicked and see if there is a reason. It may be the title of your post or the description are not conclusive to generating a click.

Here is an example that I could improve using the description section of All In One SEO. On this post it was not used so it picked up the beginning of the post but obviously as it is getting a 2% click through on a #1 listing a better description may help it.

bloglength

A good reminder to me to take advantage and use all of the features in All In One SEO as I am letting vistors get away. So taking the time to actually go through these will show you what you can do to improve your results and can be time well spent.

Next time we will discuss crawling errors from Google Webmaster Tools. Make sure you have signed up to be notified by email above or added the rss feed to your favorite reader.

As always your questions and comments are welcomed.

Last time I discussed signing up for Webmaster Tools now it is time to look at how you can use what you are learning to do better with your blogging efforts.

You should be checking the results regularly. For me that is usually once or twice a week. Now let’s look at the first item in the dashboard, the top search queries. You can see the list from this morning for this site below.

topsearch

Not surprisingly the first item is google webmaster as that was the topic of the last 2 posts I did. That is a new entry in the top queries and a new topic I have started addressing here.

Because I am doing a series on that topic this will probably stay in the list for the next week or so. Google likes fresh content and your newest items will usually rank higher but drop as time goes by.

3 of the top 10 are on this topic in a few different variations. Without checking the competition on these keywords I would expect that as I continue to do this series that it will move from the top of page 2 onto page 1.

The other new topic I addressed in the last week was Tweet Traffic Rush (a great way to generate additional; traffic through adding the widget to your pages).

These 2 topics were over half of my top 10. The other 2 topics listed there have been there for quite some time. The #2 item wordpress user levels is from a post that is over a year old and has been generating traffic since then.

Flex squeeze which is the other item listed in the top 10 is another post that is almost a year old but still doing well.

This top 10 gives you an idea of what is working right now but the real gold comes when you click the more button at the bottom of the top search queries. That will show you much more usable information.

Next time I will discuss that information in more detail so make sure you have signed up for the update list or added the rss feed here to your favorite reader.

Sign up for Google Webmaster Tools

This week I will be doing a series on getting the most out of Google Webmaster Tools. The first thing you will need to do though is sign up and verify your site.

Until you have done that and allowed Google to gather some data over a few days the tools won’t help you.

So let’s go through how to get your site signed up.

First like all of Google tools you will need a Gmail account. Then go to Google Webmaster Tools and sign in. Next click on the add site button.

addasite

Next add the url for your site in the box that shows up and click continue.

addsite1

Next you will have to verify that the site is yours. To do that you will take the meta tag that they give you and add it to your blog.

meta

To do this with your WordPress blog log in to your dashboard, click appearance, editor. Then select your header.php as the portion to be edited. Add it below the current meta tags in your header file and save.

editheader 001

Finally return to the Webmaster Tools page and click the verify button.

verify1

This will take you to the dashboard page for that site. There is only one more step and that is to submit your site map. Click the Submit A Sitemap link on the bottom right hand corner.

If you are using the Google XML Sitemap plugin you will add sitemap.xml for your location.

That completes getting your site set up in Google Webmaster Tools. Next time I’ll start on taking advantage of the information Google will generate for you.

Google Webmaster Tools is an often overlooked free resource by most bloggers. Now I know some have feelings about the amount of information Google has on all of us and that is understandable.

Google Webmaster Tools though lets you see how Google views your site.

From my tracking I can tell you that Google provides me more traffic from search than all of the other search engines combined. On some sites that is by a factor of 4 or more. That is why whether you love the Big G or hate the Big G it is important to understand how they view your site.

Some of the information they give you is very useful. When you log in you see the dashboard and it will show you the following 4 areas.

  • Top Search Queries
  • Crawl errors
  • Links to your site
  • Keywords

Each of these can help you improve your results. Today I will do a quick over view but will delve into each area in more detail in the future.

Top search queries

This will show you what terms people are using to find your site and where that particular term is ranking on Google.

Crawl errors

This will show you any problems the spiders are detecting when crawling your site.

Links to your site

This will show how many links and to which page they are pointing. You can also see the anchor text being used to link to your site.

Keywords

This will show you what Google sees as your primary keywords and how relevant they are to the content of your site.

These items will allow you to find problems and to see how Google is viewing your site allowing you to compare your view and theirs.

Tweet Traffic Rush was just opened and looks like a real simple system with some real powerful possibilities. The key is that it is targeted and can generate direct traffic to your links and targeted people to follow you on Twitter.

All you do is add a widget to your website. You can do it all in 5 minutes.

Here’s 3 reasons why Tweet Traffic Rush will work so well;

* Adds more targeted followers. Get more targeted followers and you will get more response from your tweets.

* Drives targeted traffic to your links. Since the widget is placed on similar topic web sites, the people seeing your tweet will be targeted, which will increase the amount of clicks you will get.

* Tweet Traffic Rush is free to join. Yes, you can start using Tweet Traffic Rush right now and not pay a cent. Get more targeted followers and traffic to your sites for free…

If you want to get more out of the system, there is an option to upgrade (I highly recommend it as it will help you get more followers), but there is no obligation to do so.

Since Tweet Traffic Rush is free to join, check it out now to see if it’s right for your online marketing efforts.

Try Tweet Traffic Rush.

Jimmy D Brown just released resell rights to his Multiple Streams Theme and I immediately bought a copy. Now if you are interested in the resell rights I am offering a bonus and all the details at my blog Mike Paetzold Recommends. You can also see the theme actually being used there and later today there will be a link to purchase it but not until tonight as I am busy on another project.

The big reason that I grabbed the resell rights is to be able to use it for my blog install customers not to resell it (although I will be).

The theme takes a bit to get it set up and integrate everything and will be an add on item for installation customers.

So for just 5 people I will be doing a blog install and adding in the new theme and integration for the regular price. If you would like a new blog with the Multiple Streams Theme installed and integrated here is your chance.

Blog Install

Because of the extra work this will be limited to just 5 people so grab it now if it is for you.

How to preschedule your posts

Over the past few days I have been talking about getting your blogging organized and staying ahead on your content creation. Then I was watching a couple conversations on Buzz and realized something I know I am guilty of and am sure a lot of others are too.

It is hard to go back and look at things from the beginning. Things that I do automatically are often not understandable or even easy for someone that is new and just starting. That old nasty word assume comes in and because of that I will be doing more back to basics posts to eliminate some of those problems.

Today it will be a step by step walk through of how to preschedule a post.

WordPress has made it quite easy but if you do not know how it aint easy for you. Without further ado lets get into it.

Write your post and get it ready to go as you normally would. When you are ready to publish it

publish

Click the edit button next to publish immediately. This will allow you to set the date and time you wish the post to go live.

edittime

Click the ok button and then publish. That is all you need to do and now on the date and time you picked your post will go live on your blog.

I am considering doing a post each week on back to basics items. Let me know if you like or dislike the idea in the comments below.

3 Ways To Post In Advance

This past week because of falling ill I fell behind. Normally I like to have a few posts ahead here and on my other blogs so when the unexpected comes up it does not matter. When other projects interfere this sometimes gets left by the wayside though as happened to me.

Regular readers know that I prefer to use a desk top client for doing my blogging. In my case I use a free tool – Blog Desk. It will publish directly to my blogs from my desktop and has a better editor than you get in the dashboard.

The first way to get ahead in your posting is to write them in your desk top client and then just upload them as you need them to be published. This is probably the way I use most often because if you are like me coming back a day or more later to what you have written always allows you to get a fresh perspective on it.

I make my edits then push the publish button and let it fly when I need the post. (Amazing on how even the 3rd and 4th time I edit a post I can always find a tweak or two to make it better.)

Whenever possible I always recommend you write your posts and come back to them after time away. It will improve the quality of your writing.

The second way you can get ahead on your posting is to upload your posts but in draft format. Doing this allows you to do the same editing before you publish them and as long as you are where you can log in to your blog you can hit the final publish button.

Not my preferred method but good if you are traveling as I can publish from any computer with internet access.

The third way to post in advance is to schedule your posts for a specific time and date. This is my preferred way for my niche blogs. Whether I am writing the material or have outsourced it I will do a batch and upload them to be posted at a specific interval.

This allows me to go in once every week or month depending on the blog and set it up then walk away.

I rarely use this to a great extent on my main blogs unless I know things will be interfering. Now I already know that next week I will be off schedule as my Mom is getting her knee replaced.

Knowing this I will be setting up my posts for that time period this week so that I will continue to add content but will not have to worry about getting online at specific times.

All 3 ways work and you should adapt them to what is good for you. The major point is that if you want to be a successful blogger you do need to post regularly and getting ahead will allow you to do that even when life interferes.

Why you need to be organized as a blogger

Well I just finished the lost week here if you have not noticed. Not sure what hit me but Monday night I got something and have been pretty much down for the count until today.

Normally that would not be a problem as I usually have a week’s worth of posts queued up that I can turn to in a case like this. Unfortunately I have been extremely tied up on an upcoming project and had used up all of my inventory.

Because I had let that happen this blog went quiet for a few days and not just this blog but my other blogs too. So my content delivery went down big time.

Now it will go back up now that I can spend more than 5 minutes without needing to blow my nose and can compose two thoughts in a row.

So over the weekend (which is supposed to be gorgeous here) I will get the blogs queued back up and back to normal content delivery instead of enjoying the warm weather. Sucks to get sick.

So how do I normally avoid this when I am not in the middle of a big project and how can you avoid this problem because the one sure thing is that life will happen and not always to your schedule.

First do your keyword research and create topics for the next two weeks. Then set time aside to sit and write the two weeks of content and put them in draft format.

Every week do a week’s worth of content so you stay ahead or every other week do two weeks. You get the idea but then if life interferes and it will you are good for a week or two.

It sounds harder than it is as it is actually easier to write 5 blog posts at once than to write a post a day for 5 days. Once you start writing it is much easier to keep writing just schedule the time and allow no interference.

That means turn off Skype, close your email and Twitter client or anything else that is not needed and sit down and write. When you finish one start on the next until you have written however many you need.

This is where the Affiliate Niche Packs can be invaluable. You already have the keywords and titles so it becomes easy to sit and write and once you get on a roll it becomes easier.

Well that is how I do it when I don’t get caught short like this week so I am off to keep writing as I know week after next I will be missing a few days while my Mom gets her knee replaced.
