WordPress 2.8 Release Candidate out so a quick review
Things are looking good unless there are unexpected problems for the release of WordPress 2.8 tomorrow. Means it is time for a reminder.
May sound like a broken record to old time readers but a review of upgrading your WordPress version is important.
First check the status on the plugins and themes you used. You can find the current compatibility listings below.
More concerned with the ones listed as known problems then whether the plugin or theme is listed in the compatible area as quite a few authors don’t bother to submit their information but testers that have problems do.
So once you are aware of any of those problems it is time to get your backups ready. Go pull the database whether you use PHPMyAdmin to export it or use the WP Database Backup plugin.
The other files I want to back up are the wp-config.php and any themes or plugins that I have edited the code in.
Once I have that you can use the auto upgrade in WordPress and let it upgrade. I may just be a paranoid old bald guy and have only once ever needed the files I pull but if Murphy lives at your house like he does at mine the time you don’t do the backups will be the time you need it.
Video below to walk you through the upgrade as the process hasn’t changed from the last time.
So be like the Boy Scout and be prepared for the changes.
Reminder: Tomorrow night will be the monthly Q and A on Blog Talk Radio. Leave your questions in the comments and mark your calendar for June 10th 7pm edt to attend.
Talk to you soon.

Thanks for the heads-up, Mike – after seeing all the compatibility issues, I downloaded a clean copy of 2.7.1 and will stick to using it for now – why risk conflicts on a dozen blogs we’ve put so much time into with testing and tweaks – when WP gets it together and comes out with backward-compatible updates, then I can go to whatever version it is by then – in the meantime I have this one ready to use anytime.

Mike, Thanks for keeping us posted on 2.8 progress. I think if any of my plugins are not compatible, I may wait a while to update. Don’t see either of my themes in the list of “Working Themes, no issues” either.

I like the videos and your notes about checking to make sure everything is backed up and working. This is very useful information and I hope I will get things ready to go. Thanks.

Great… I’m looking forward to see what all they change. Thank you for the reminder, as it is important that we all update.

I just got done upgrading to 2.7 last week. Figure its best to go slow and listen for screams of anguish. I hope to be able to come back here when I get around to the upgrade. Wondering though, other than copying the permalink and putting it in a file, or remembering your title, what would be the best way to keep track of this and/or other blog posts I might want to remember and reference back again at a future date?

2 things – First if you are on 2.7 and not 2.7.1 upgrade to that because it was a security fix.
You can search by topic here and that will usually locate the posts you are interested in.

Thanks for the heads up Mike,
Really looking forward to the upgrade to 2.8 and so far none of the plugins I use are on the naughty list.
Really love some of the features they have added to 2.8.
