Finding Blogs To Comment On
I have been discussing comments for the last few posts and today lets talk about finding blogs to comment on.
Now there are lists and various posts showing you exactly which blogs are do follow and some people swear by those. If all you are looking for is back links maybe that makes sense but not to me.
Worrying about the do follow or whether or not they use Comment Luv may make you better for SEO purposes but I prefer to find blogs that are on my topic.
Those blogs are much more likely to have people clicking through to my blogs and possibly becoming regular readers.
So even though I would prefer to only comment on blogs that do follow and use Comment Luv the topic is more important.
To do this I go to Google News. Put in my topic and add the rss feed to my Google Reader. This way I see all the newest information on my topic. I can use this to find very current posts on topics I am interested in.
As I find blogs that show up regularly and frequently I add their feed to my reader. Just checking my reader a few times a day and I can find all of their newest posts and go comment.
The closer you are to being the first comment the more people that will see your comment. The more that see it the more traffic you are likely to get.
This is also a good way to find information to share with your Twitter followers too and if you add in Friend Feed you can automate your Twitter posting to build an even better relationship with your Twitter followers.
Twitter Time Saver will show you exactly how to automate that into an easy to use system.

Thanks for the tips Mike!
You always hear everyone saying that you have to find the blogs with do-follow and CommentLuv and there are a ton of tools out there to do just that.
It’s nice to hear a different take on the matter and I like the way that you have laid it out to make it much easier to follow the blogs that are a good fit for you.

Hi Mike,
You are right on the money … in my view developing a good relationship with your peers is ultimately far more valuable in the long run. I try to find bloggers who are relatively new and are having awesome results – they are at once inspiring, motivating and good models. I just started to look at it this way about two months ago and have found that I enjoy my business more and am beginning to see a small uptick in my traffic.

What I like about this technique is that you have built it into your normal marketing procedures.
There is too much emphasis on building backlinks and not enough on building a readership and a community.

When researching for my list of Must-Follow blogs, I took the following into consideration – a) topic b) PageRank c) DoFollow and d) CommentLuv. While it’s not necessary or even wise to limt one’s blog commenting to just those that rank highest on all 4 criteria, one also has t be careful how much time they spend on a daily basis reading & commenting on blogs, since it’s only one facet of our marketing operations online.
BTW – Congrats on making Group One on the list, Mike!

I agree with part of what you are saying but if you are dealing with the active blogs in your niche you tend to get more follow through. If there are too many to comfortably follow that are active in your niche then you look deeper for do follow and Comment Luv.

“The closer you are to being the first comment the more people that will see your comment. The more that see it the more traffic you are likely to get.” This has come up twice in the last few days on blogs that I have visited. It seems to be important.
I agree with you on commenting on blogs that are on my toppic. However, if I am pressed for time and I run across two really good blogs and one has DoFollow and CommentLuv and one does not, I will generally opt to comment on the one that does rather than the one that does not.

Mike I am a bit unclear about this system:
“To do this I go to Google News. Put in my topic and add the rss feed to my Google Reader. This way I see all the newest information on my topic. I can use this to find very current posts on topics I am interested in.:
Where does one put the RSS feed when on the Google News Page??
Thanks again for all of your help these past several years

I was struggling with Doug’s List of blogs, wondering how to monitor them, and now that I’ve been to your blog, the answer is clear. I learned how in your twitter tips eBook, but hadn’t made the mental connection to using Reader to monitor peoples blogs. Guess I’m even denser than I thought.

Great tips Mike. I often find blogs I’m interested in just by reading comments and clicking through to those site. There are a number right here on this post that I’ll be checking out.
Being first is a plus but being one of the last also has it’s advantages if you take the time to visit read the comments above your and comment on their sites. That’s a great way to build your community and get more traffic back to your site.
