More on blog comment spam
Yesterday I went off on a rant. It was set off because of spam blog comments. The funny thing is this happens only on various test blogs that I have up for a wide variety of testing purposes, video creation, etc.
Fortunately I rarely get this problem on my main blogs because of the plugins I use. For me I use WP-Spam Free and that gets rid of the automated spam quite well. Combining that with Askimet (comes with the WordPress install) keeps my main blogs clean.
The numbers of spam comments that they catch on this blog is quite numerous. Here is a picture from my dashboard.

Now this blog gets a lot of comments and the amount of comment spam would make me scream if not for this plugin combination. The point of yesterday’s post was to make people aware of the futility of using these spam techniques.
Take part in the conversation and you can create back links and generate visitors that resonate with you. (The kind that are already pre-disposed to your content.) Use the crap and you just piss people off.

My blog gets comments spam too, but thanks to the two plugins you suggest, it really does make it much easier to manage. I rarely have good comments show up in the spam queue, the only time is usually when it is just a trackback.
I let some of those in, if the site is somewhat related to weight loss, but if it is a porn or pharmaceutical peddler, they don’t see the light of day!
Thanks for recommending the best plugins! They really do make blogging fun!

I use WP-Spam Free and Askimet also and they seem to work pretty well. I just check and I had 4 that are in my spam box and WP-SpamFree has blocked 2,626 spam comments. Askimet also seems to have a problem itself right now. I get the following message:
Akismet has detected a problem. A server or network problem is preventing Akismet from working correctly.
Haven’t had a chance to check that out yet.

Hi Mike. I had not heard of WP-Spam free so thatnks for that. I find it very annoying and get them as well. I find that Askimet catches the majority of them. I have a couple of blogs that I don’t update as frequently as my main blog and when I do I have to spend some time cleaning spam. The unfortunate thing is that this tactic (spam commenting) must work as there are plenty of blogs that don’t have anti comment spam or don’t bother to delete them. Thanks for bringing this to our attention

Thanks for the tips Mike.
Have been using askimet at the moment. Was concerned that having two spam monitors might cause conflicts, but apparently not in this case. Will have to add wp-spam free to my list of plug-ins as well.
Thanks again

Your right, using the right anti-spam plug-in can really save yourself a lot of time from manually deleting those comments… something which I don’t want to do 26,000 times
