Protecting your blog – Its a shame but necessary…
The recent spate of upgrades from WordPress bring to the fore front the number of malicious people out there looking to take advantage of other people’s sites. The latest 2.8.5 was solely to make it harder for the miscreants to add stuff to your blog and that is a shame but the way it is.
Keeping your plugins and WordPress version up to date has become even more important but you should go a step further. It used to be I added plugins to my blogs to create added functionality but more and more I find myself adding more plugins to protect or at least detect bad things happening.
It started with spam comments but now with data base injections and other problems you have a need ot be a bit more proactive in protecting your blog. Here are some of the plugins I have added.
Askimet which comes with the WordPress install and WP-Spam Free help me with spam..
For other items I have added WordPress Exploit Scanner and WordPress Anti Virus.Running those regularly seems to help.
The big thing though is to have current back ups of any changes you have made to your themes along with a current data base back up. If you have the data base backup it is relatively easy to restore your site if the miscreants come for you.
Use WordPress Database Backup to automate backing your site up as you can have the backups emailed to you regularly. I still like to manually run it once a week but it may just be that I am paranoid that the plugin will quit and I won’t notice one less email than expected in my email box.
So despite the problems those are some solutions that can help you if you do have problems to at least recover.
Some day we may not need to worry about people wanting to invade your blog or a script will become hacker proof but until then make sure to take the necessary steps.

Yes, there are a lot of bad people around. Just all the “fake” emails in my inbox shows. Not too many innocent people know how to look under a displayed link before clicking it. I’m trying to automate my backups as well, even decided the get an special account for that. Not very good in scheduling myself….

It is a shame that there are bad people out there doing bad things. And for such a thing there is the need to protect ones self form mischief. Even though it is a pain I am willing to go and protect my blogs from being invaded. Thanks for keeping us up with what is happening.

It is unfortunate but we will never get rid of “miscreants”. We just need to be proactive and protect our blogs and computers. I don’t back up by DB as often as I should – really need to make it a weekly thing

Yes, it is a little frustrating having to update my blog all the time, but it is very important to do. There will always be new hackers trying to mess things up, so we just have to protect our blogs and do what we can. Thanks for all the updates!
