Why oh why do people do this?
Was just surfing through some blogs today (I know what else is new I always visit blogs) and saw more than one with this basic mistake. Now to set the record straight these were affiliate marketing blogs that have some great pre-sell articles on them but…
The call to action was a nothing more than a bare link. No hyperlink in the post. On a few, to make it stand out even more they were Clickbank links. You know the kind…
http://mpaet3.eitem.hop.clickbank.net
Not very attractive even if I really wanted to get the product when I could easily make it into something like this…
Even if you are creating redirects like this
http://mikepaetzold.com/likes/vce
People will be more likely to click the middle one and it is really easy to do with WordPress yet quite a few times today I ran across blogs that did the first or the last.
Made me think so I asked myself why? Yes I am old , bald and talk to myself – A LOT
sometimes the only intelligent conservation I can get. Guess I spend too much time with the turtles
So it came down to two things.
- Laziness – can’t do much for that reason
- Not understanding how easy it is to hyperlink
So let walk through how to hyperlink a phrase or name using the WYSIWYG in WordPress.
Highlight the text you want to hyperlink – in the above example “Get Video Cash Explosion”. Highlight the term and click the rope looking thing at the top

When you click that it opens a box where you add the url, how you want it to open and a title..

and click insert.
So that is all you need to do to make your text be a hyperlink of text rather than just add a straight url to the post.

As always, a really powerful & helpful suggestion for your readers, Mike!
In addition, many programs and sites offer tracking URLs so people can see how effective each link is, so they can use those as well – and I KNOW how much you love tracking!

Oh yes lots more about that such as cloaking and tracking but for bloggers just understanding how to hyperlink is important.

Thanks Mike, it took me a while to understand that WordPress had that ability. It really does make a difference with your readers. And don’t feel bad about talking to yourself, I would only be worried if you started to answer. -:)

This is a great post Mike! I too see this mistake, and I “assume” I use to do it myself when I first started.
But it’s true, people don’t like clicking on big long links, so we need to help them out and make them shorter and more simple.
We always have to be testing and tracking these things to know what will work best.

Well I’m not sure whether to leave a comment or not Mike seeing you have these delusional ideas that no-one else can contribute to an intelligent conversation.. LOL.
Yes, you are absolutely right. Anchor text links are very easy to do and apart from the “attractiveness” of the way the link is formulated, they are also great for SEO.
Cheers,

Great tip for making our links look clean and professional. Guess the wife is right, I do need to read the directions occasionally. I wouldn’t worry about talking to yourself, I do it all the time. The only time it bothers me is when I get into an argument and lose;-)
Wishing you a larger life,

You make a great point here Mike.
It really doesn’t take that much longer to do so I think that a lot of times people just get in a hurry and don’t really stop to think about the differences that it might make to the person stopping by to read their blog.
You are right though, it does make a difference and people just need to stop and look at their blog from the perspective of their reader once in a while.
BTW: I sure hope one of those blogs wasn’t mine!
(I’m sure I am guilty of doing this myself even though I try not to)

It’s a lack of care and attention that you see in lots of autoresponder broadcasts too. How many emails do you get which start with [firstname] rather than your name? The sender has not tested their broadcast and in my view this lack of professionalism alienates the reader…

Hi Mike,
Good points.
I suspect people don’t go that extra step and make the link more inviting because they’re in such a hurry to get something, anything, out onto the Internet before someone else takes their prospects!

I agree that not using anchor text is a function of either lack of time or lack of understanding. I don’t think people appreciate that it pays to have anchor text that is different to the text incorporated in the URL. Anchor text on sites such as Squidoo are great drawcards for Google.
