WordPress releases 2.8.1 – yes this one you need to upgrade
WordPress just released the upgrade for version 2.8. Form the WordPress blog
WordPress 2.8.1 fixes many bugs and tightens security for plugin administration pages. Core Security Technologies notified us that admin pages added by certain plugins could be viewed by unprivileged users, resulting in information being leaked. Not all plugins are vulnerable to this problem, but we advise upgrading to 2.8.1 to be safe.
There are other items that have been fixed also and you can see the full list at that post.
Remember to pull the data base and any themes or plugins that you have edited previously.
I have put the video on doing the upgrade below as nothing has changed as far as the upgrade process since this was made.
If you are not comfortable upgrading your blog I can do it for you just go here and enter your order and follow the steps after the payment.

Thanks for providing the video to make sure I am doing the right things preparing for the upgrade. It will be helpful. I really enjoy the new features of Wordpress so anything they do to improve it is worth doing.

Thanks for the update. Updated one blog automatically and one manually. Both seem to be working fine at this point.

Thanks for letting people know about this! I admit I was tempted to put it off, especially since some things went weird after I upgraded to 2.8. Its good to know about the security issues, that puts things in a different light.

Very cool.. thanks for the video! Often times with new released I wait a while to see if updates are needed/supplied, even if I “can’t wait” for the new version.

Thanks for the update, Mike! With so many updates to WP coming down the pike so quickly, it’s great to have a go-to guy that lets us know which are mandatory and which can be delayed or ignored.

Mike, Honestly I don;t upgrade my blogs. I tried a couple the last two updates with WP and the blogs haven’t worked the same since. Even reloaded back to original DB and files and tried again and still did the same thing. They give an error with the wp-includes/formatting.php file. when you post something to the blog.
Does the same thing with this version as well.
Any ideas of what can cause this?

Tough to say without the full error but usually it is a problem with the theme or a plugin not being compliant with the latest upgrades.

Hi Mike.
Thanks for the heads up. I’m always a little nervous doing upgrades as I had a problem once. I love that you put the video up again for reference. Will upgrade this weekend

Hey Mike,
Thanks for the helpful advice. Since I haven’t gotten
much on my blogs yet, I think I’ll try the automatic
update and see what happens.
Incidently, I don’t live far from you – Southern
Lancaster County.
Always appreciate your help.

Mike,
Here is the error that shows after posting to the blog
Catchable fatal error: Object of class stdClass could not be converted to string in /home/wwwdont/public_html/mybaby-stuff.com/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 1128

Hey, Mike.
I’ve been trying to upgrade for several days with no luck. I am currently using WordPress 2.7.1. Every time I try the automatic update, it fails. I tried downloading and installing it manually, but I can’t open the file. The .zip file seems to be corrupt.
Is there another place to download the file other than from my WP dashboard?
Thanks.

You can go directly to WordPress to download the latest version – http://wordpress.org/download/

@Mike – Hey, Mike. That didn’t work. The file should be 2.2 MB, but when it downloads it’s 123 KB.
Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
This is getting very frustrating.

Has to be a problem with your machine I have just downloaded the file with no problem and it is all there.
Michelle Schneider on July 15, 2009 at 4:48 pm
@Mike – I’ll try a different browser to download it. If that doesn’t work, I guess I need to check my firewall settings.
Thanks.
