Are your blog posts focused?
Yesterday we discussed how long your blog post should be so today let’s talk about focus. The conclusion from yesterday was that your post needed to be as long as necessary and no longer.
The key to that though is focus. Keeping your post on a specific topic will allow you to keep the length right. It will keep your reader engaged.
Finally it will usually help you rank for the keyword phrase you are writing about because your post will naturally be more on that topic and as LSI becomes a bigger part of the rankings you should get rewarded more.
Now that does not mean you can’t cover multiple items but that all of the items you cover are part of the same focus.
For an example I could and have more than once (mainly because they consistently change as WordPress changes) done a list of the plugins I use for SEO.
Yes I would be describing what the functions are for the various plugins so it would be multiple topics. The whole post though would just be on the plugins that I use for SEO and not that list and description along with all of the other reasons I use WordPress as my blogging platform.
Why I use WordPress would be a topic for another post. Having all of that with the post on SEO plugins would make it harder to rank for SEO plugins or Why use WordPress where as two separate posts would rank much better for each term.
So stay focused and go do a focused post now.

Mike, it is indeed smart to focus blog post. Length much depend on what the focus is. Longer then necessary is maybe not hurting, but splitting it might give a lot more benefit.
My observations is that longer post (well over 400) will rank better in Google.

This is exactly what I need to work on. Focus. I always try to cram too much in a post and it ends up a rambling mess that not even I can follow.
Thanks for the pointers Mike. I think you might make a blogger out of me yet! lol.

Very good points Mike,
Unfortunately I don’t follow them as much as I should. I don’t write as often as I should, and probably for this reason, when I do get in the mood to write, I tend to ramble on and jump subjects.
This all comes back to planning and I obviously don’t plan out my posts as well as I should. If I did I could probably stay on subject much better.
Am really enjoying this series on blog posting and looking forward to more as this is an area I definitely need to improve.

Great point, Mike! When promoting anything using a blog, it’s best to isolate the profitable keywords, both short and long-tail, then do a separate post around each – this keeps new content flowing, ensures strong SEO & LSI ratings, and keeps you from overloading your readers with too much information in any one post.
