Commenting and a must read post from a friend
Been a bit lax this week on getting here and posting but something I read today triggered some ideas. I will be doing a series of posts about commenting both the getting and going out and commenting on other blogs.
Some of it has just become in grained as it is a rare day when I do not comment on someone’s blog and I have been fortunate that although I don’t get as many comments as I would like (and doubt I ever will even if it was a hundred a day cause I am a greedy Old bald Guy) I do get comments regularly.
Now to the post that got my creative juices going. It was from my friend Alex Syseof and you should go read it.
The Power Of Desperation Or How Bloggers Encourage Comment Spammers
Alex puts out some good content and has been a guest blogger here as I have been there. Then let me know what you think and what questions you have about commenting by leaving a comment below.
(Yes that is one way that I try to increase comments

Hey Mike,
I went off to read Alex’s post and almost forgot to come back here. Alex makes a very good point and I know that you’ve also stressed many times the importance of protecting our blogs from spammers and even hackers. You guys are my go to guys for all things WordPress – thanks

I did enjoy that reading from Alex. It had some really good ideas and some useful plug ins I had not tried. As always you have provided good content. How could someone not want to comment on your blog? Thanks.

Some blogs make it harder to comment. Some seem to auto fill my data, others make me type it all in. I’m lazy and usually have three different things going on at once. If it’s a struggle to post a comment, most likely I won’t.

Auto fill or lack of it would not make me not comment however captchas, requiring registration would definitely turn me off.

It is a great post by Alex. I appreciate both of you.
I have been lax on visiting the sites I love. Can’t do everything I guess. But this week I have been back on track and I have learned tons and laughed a lot.
I have to admit that I need to be better about commenting.

Two very important points here, Mike – the first being that most blog readers don’t understand how much they’re leaving on the table by not commenting when they read a good blog post. Their comment show their expertise, and provides another valuable backlink to their own site.
The second is that within the marketing community we need to do more to interact with each other’s blogs, as you and Alex have here and as you & Nicole Dean have done with your blog tours – kudos to you on both.
It’s no wonder that after 13 years online, with more than a dozen blogs we author, Teri & I consider you and Alex to be the 2 go-to guys for blogging!

I know that commenting on other people’s blogs is important. Sometimes I just don’t take the time to do it. Thanks for letting us know about Alex’s post. I also commented on his blog. Thinks for reminding us about the importance of commenting.

Thanks for the link to a great post with some great ideas. I can’t wait to look into comment relish! I think that’ll be a great little addition to my blog and I could always use more comments (couldn’t we all?)
I also wanted to comment on the comments above in regards to being lazy or why someone wouldn’t leave a comment …
Having to fill out my information manually does not bother me in the least but I do have a problem with places where I have to register to leave a comment. Sometimes I simply do not have the time to take those extra steps. Nor do I need yet another username and password to keep track of the next time I visit and want to comment.
In my opinion … making your readers register before leaving a comment is doing the exact opposite of encouraging comments.
On a side note … great blog! I’ve only read a few posts so far and I’ve picked up some awesome tips. The best part is they’re something *new*. It’s not a bunch of rehashed junk. Thank you!
Off to subscribe to two new blogs!

Thanks for linking us to Alex’s post.
Definitely worth reading. I was already using CommentLuv due to yours and Dougs suggestion. Will have to look into the other two plug-ins and test them out.
I’ll have to admit that I have fallen into the trap that he is talking about and have approved a few comments that I knew were spam, but still had a somewhat relative comment.
I just told myself that it would be good to have the page change a little when the search engines came crawling again.
Obviously there are other more useful ways to do this and I know that now, but when you a first starting out it is easy to want that first few comments, even if they are spam.
Thanks again Mike.
