How long should your blog post title be?

This topic came up in the comments on how long your blog post should be and I felt it would be good to address it here. I love getting questions in the comments and try my best to make sure that they get covered here in the future.

This is similar to the original question on how long a blog post should be in that there is no right answer. Maybe as long as it needs to be would be close.

More important than how long is your title is does it attract attention?

After all like the title of an article or the headline on a sales letter the one thing it needs to do and the only thing it really needs to do is to get someone’s interest so they will read the rest of the post.

If it does that in one or two words – great. If not and it needs 10 words but works that is great too. If it does not get the person to read then it is wrong whether it is two words, ten words or anywhere in between.

Now the post title is not necessarily going to be the title tag for the post. When you are looking at the title tag the closer you get the keyword phrase you are targeting to the beginning of the title the more weight it will give you in getting better search engine rankings.

If you look at the title tag for this post you will see that unlike the post title above it is Blog post title – How long should it be? as I am targeting the keyword phrase “blog post title” with this post.
