Blog or website? Website or blog?

WordPress Made EAsy

Today’s question:

I have a nonprofit organization that cares for HIV/AIDS orphans. I currently have a website and want to update. Trying to determine if I should go for the Blog or stay with a website. For me the main purpose for changing would be so I can update on a regular basis without depending on a webmaster. So website or blog?

This is one that comes up quite regularly. I may be a bit prejudiced but in almost all cases my answer is a blog or other CMS script like Joomla that allows for a non technical user to update it.

The reasons are quite simple. The script handles all the navigation changes, it has an RSS feed so you can syndicate your content and most use a very simple interface for content creation.

Now it does take a bit of technical skill to set up the script and install the proper plugins, change permalinks etc. but once that is done anyone that can use a word processor can update the content.

There are some cases where I make an exception. Almost any kind of sales page should NOT be on a blog. Anywhere that you ask people to make a decision a blog usually has too many leaks or ways for someone to leave without taking action.

Hope that helps you make your decision.

As always your questions and comments are welcomed.
