Catching up on things
There has been a lot going on this week with WordPress and myself. WordPress released version 2.8, I held the monthly Blog Talk Radio WordPress Q and A and re-launched WordPress Made Easy.
So some of the comments and question have not gotten answered. Time to correct that as much as I can.
The first was a question on the subscription pop that I use. It is a light box pop. There are a few available. The one I like the best and use on my Mike Paetzold Recommends blog is a paid version of Optin Pop plugin.
It has a free version there too. The difference is the paid version allows you to rotate different pops. For me I like that and use it for more than just adding subscribers.
I will offer different items for the signup or use it to refer people to various Butterfly Marketing style sites too. This way people see different offers each time they stop by. You can use a site like Instant Bonus Pages to find quite a few of these type sites and then target the offer to your audience. You can set it to load on entrance, time delayed or on exit.
The other question that I saw I missed was on widgets with the new WordPress 2.8. You do need to save the widget once you drag it.

As soon as you drag a new widget it expands so you can set the options. Even if you are using the defaults you need to hit the save button.
Think that catches up on what I have missed. As always if you have questions on WordPress and blogging use the comments below.

I certainly like 2.8, most changes making it a lot easier to follow up and manage your blog.

One of my blogs handled the wordpress 2.8 upgrade perfectly. Another Blog with a different theme but the exact same widgets crashed all widget functions. Do you have suggestions?
Reinstall did not help.

Sounds like a theme problem then. You have tow choices if you did the backups.
Reinstall 2.7.1 and if necessary bring back the data base you saved or change your theme.
Personally I would change the theme unless the theme author is going to update it to make it compatible.

Thanks for keeping us all up to speed on WordPress, Mike! Have never seen a program or service release so many incremental changes – so many that it makes it impossible for most marketers to stay on top of them. Due to your specialization in this area you’re able to, and passing along just the most important of those changes to your readers makes this a very valuable resource to all online marketers – Thanks!

I’m one that likes to wait before upgrading. If it ain’t broke dont fix it. I will eventually upgrade to 2.8 but only when I have time and am not rushed. That way I make sure I back up properly – fopllowing one of your backup posts.

Thanks for the tip on the widget. I found that out myself the hard way the first time I added one.
Oh well, live and learn
Thanks for continuing to provide us with great information on WordPress.
BTW: Love Wordpress 2.8, especially the ability to take a widget offline without losing your configuration and being able to put it back at a later date.

Got my blog updated and everything is working okay. But I am glad that I took your advice and backed up my files before. I did have a few problems that had to be corrected and I would have cried if I had lost all my material. Thanks for the tips.
