Using articles on your blog
I am continuing the series of answers to questions that were asked in my pre-Christmas post. You can ask your questions to be added to the series by commenting on this or any other post.
Today’s question:
What is your suggestion for those that republish articles from other websites on their blog? (i.e. what do you think the ratio of original content to republished articles should be)
Okay this will definitely fall into the category of opinion. I don’t think there is a magic number where you can say I need one original article for every 2 republished articles.
A lot of it will depend on the purpose of your blog. Even more so will be whether or not you are adding to the republished content.
Some of my blogs like this one with the exception of personally picked guest bloggers the answer would be none at least most of the time.
The exception would be where I find a great article on WordPress and to use that on this blog I would have an intro on why I really like the particular article and probably an exit blurb asking for discussion of it.
I would never just use an article by itself for content on this blog.
Now on some of my niche blogs I do and my personal opinion there is that I do want at least 1 out of 3 posts to be unique to me. That is my personal judgment and I have no tracking or quality resource that I could quote to feel that way.
Most of the time even on the niche blogs I am going to at least add an intro as to why I like the article to use republished content. That seems to work well and some of those posts rank reasonably well.
The key though is that it keeps my opinion there even though the bulk of the content was created by someone else. Again all of this article is opinion with a bit of personal experience thrown in but not enough to call any of this facts.
Be interested in what you have to say if you have used this on your blog. Leave your comments below.
On another topic I am almost out of questions so if you have a question you would like addressed here leave it in the comments.

As you say, there’s no stats I’ve seen about such ratios, but I’m inclined to agree with your 2-1 ratio, Mike. I’s enough to show you’re bringing them the best info regardless of the source, while demonstrating your own expertise in the posts you author.
Another good thing about your system is the addition of new material at the top of each post – the SEO experts tell us that the first content on any page carries the most weight with the search engines, and with your system it’s always your content in that coveted position.

With so much content out there that is free to use on your own blog, I can see why some people would want to simply use that content. But like you said, it does depend on your blog and your goals with it.
When thinking about the SEO aspect of it, all original content is best, but I don’t see why you can’t have some of the same content as another site.

Here is a question, What should you do if another blogger attacks your content or a specific Post?

We encourage guest Bloggers contributing relevant Content to our Blog Niche, and I occasionally use Major portions of other posts with some discussion.
So far it has not seemed to affect SEO results at all.
I love the question from R Brian Burkhardt:
My feeling is “so What”
and are they a Paying Customer?

Thanks for the answer to the question Mike.
Brian raises a good point and it has happened on one occasion with me on one of my sites using a republished article from an article directory. I took the article down.

I have a burning question:
I am seeing a difference of opinion among internet marketers (not necessarily blackhat) as to when you should add monetization to a niche blog (or website). Some say not to put Adsense or other such things on for at least 1 mo. so that you won’t risk getting in the google sandbox for 6 mo. (or forever) and others (esp. the ones who write/sell autoblog/auto website software etc) say that you can put up niche websites/blogs and make money right away by monetizing. I have some domain names that I would rather not lose to the google sandbox. Do you have an opinion on whether you can/should monetize right away (if so, how) or should you wait some period of time? 1 month?
Thank you for your help. I have always found your advice to be right on.

Many times someone else has say something in a way that no one can really say something better than it has been said. So I think that it is OK to post someone else’s article on your blog. Of course you need to give credit when it is due. Make sure you include the author’s resource box or the acknowledgement as required by the author.
