Using more than 2 categories?

Is it harmful to place a post in two categories? I have many posts that fit more than one of the categories I have created.

This is actually not a problem. You can use multiple categories. The only downside to my thinking is that I like to keep posts targeted as much as possible.

I personally like to target my posts and would rather create two separate small posts than to have one long post.

My thoughts on this are that it is better for getting rankings for specific terms on the search engines. Especially with the advent of LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) the post is likely to rank higher for a single targeted topic than two somewhat similar topics.

Now that is just my feeling and I have nothing to document it but have seen the specific topics I am targeting do much better in the rankings since I have started that. Without running a similar combined post on a similar blog it would be impossible to tell.
