Why the new plugin on the blog?
By Mike | April 9, 2008

Today’s question is:
Hi Mike, I have noticed the ‘Bookmark’ button appearing on a few blogs recently. Yours was the first and as the undoubted expert on plug-ins does this replace the ‘Sociable’ plug-in?. It seems much better in that all the sites can be included as opposed to having to select.
The bookmark plugin does replace Sociable. The biggest advantage is a single link out but at this point it is just a test.
See the problem is that I now have one link out but until the testing is done the key will be how many bookmark links am I losing because of it. I track those things so that shortly I can tell.
The decrease in outgoing links is great but…
If no one uses it because it is now a 2 step process then I lose all the new incoming links. So at this point the jury is out until the stats come in.
If you are not tracking what is going on then you can’t tell which changes helped you and which didn’t.
Will definitely talk more about it though as the results become quantifiable.
As always your questions and comments are welcomed. The more interaction the more often this blog will be posted.
Anyone interested in more videos on WordPress 2.5? Let me know.

Hi Mike,
I’d be interested in your comments as to whether
there are too many tag displays at my blog. The
reason I ask is that you dont appear to use tags
at all - and there must be a reason for that.
Here’s a recent post, for example. You will see
the tags in 2 places…

Could you do a video showing the exact steps to take to upgrade to the new WordPress 2.5 version?
I know WordPress has the basic instructions, but you could show us any tips or tricks to watch for.

Hi Mike,
I was wondering if you have used the wp-automatic-upgrade plugin. I have it to be great and saves a lot to time when upgrading to a new version such as 2.5.

There is a difference between the plugin upgrade and upgrading to a new version.
I have used the plugin upgrader and it worked well except for one time. As it hasn’t duplicated the problem was a server glitch on either mine or where the download was coming from.

Sorry Wm missed your question the first time through. I have a video on upgrading on You Tube. It hasn’t changed and the big thing is to always back everything up first.
My user name on You Tube is mikepaetzold.
