Sunday Rant – Getting side tracked
Sunday morning here and time for a rant. Topic today will be getting side tracked. And oh is it ever easy to get side tracked.
In reviewing what I have been doing and even posting here I see that in some ways I may be contributing to side tracking you. Sorry.
The upcoming release of WordPress 3.0 is one of those things that I have been writing about that may contribute to you getting side tracked.
3.0 is a major change and has a ton of neat features. Now I use WordPress as a CMS (content management system) for some of my sites and for my offline customers.
If this is you what I have been writing about it was not a side tracker.
But…
If you use WordPress primarily for creating standard blogs a lot of what the new features do will just side track you if you start worrying about how these new features will help you.
Depending on how much tweaking of your blog you do these features will be of concern or not. If you are in the not faction be aware of the changes but don’t spend any time thinking about how you can use it.
Because you are now aware that you can do it when it is something you need you can take the time to learn how to use it. Until then awareness is all you need and when you need more it is easy to search and get the information you need.
This is just one example of how easy it is to get side tracked even by people trying to help you.
Your business and what you need will always be specific to you. Learning how to pick and choose the things that will help your business and the things that will side track you is not easy.
Keeping with the same topic as an example let’s look at one new feature. The new menu functions.
You can create custom menus and have them use drop downs for your menu structure.
Now if you are using WordPress it is important to know what features are available but if this wasn’t important enough to your business to custom code it before is it important for you to figure out how to use it now?
Is your time better spent adding more blog posts or in creating fancy menus?
Which one will actually improve what your results you are looking for from your blog?
These types of question whether looking at the new WordPress 3.0 or the latest shiny object that hits your email box are necessary for you to keep from getting side tracked.
Being aware of the numerous ways you can get side tracked and asking some simple questions can help you keep on track so ask them all the time. Even with my content
.
So go stay focused.
