There is a huge buzz about Twitter and the various social media. You hear it on the television (think Oprah), in the newspaper (even my little local Schuykill county PA paper has an account) and just about everywhere you turn.

The key is should it be a part of your blogging? And if so how can I use it in a time efficient manner?

The first question is easy. It absolutely should be BUT….

Yeah, I know always with the big but (that was but not butt stop looking back there it aint that big) that makes the easy not quite so easy.

You absolutely should be using Twitter if you can attract qualified followers and build a relationship with them so they will visit your blog and take advantage of your offers without spending forever to do it.

If you can do that it becomes an easy answer to absolutely use it.

If you end up spending hours and hours trying to make it work then it is a definite no. You are taking time away from creating content for your readers. Good content on your blog is always the top priority and will be your biggest draw for increasing visitors.

The key to making this work is to be able to use Twitter to attract more readers. Twitter followers properly targeted have become a bigger portion of my readership. Using items to automate some of it like Tweet My Blog is a huge time saver.

The big problem with Twitter though is to break through the clutter. You want, need to be seen as an authority by your followers on your topic. That way you will break through the clutter and be one of the people that they actually pay attention to.

If you are using some of the tools to maintain your Twitter account like Tweet Deck you have probably already started sorting the messages from people you follow. I have a general column but there are those that I segregate into groups so their tweets show separately and I don’t miss the people that provide me with quality information. This is where you want to get to with your followers.

If you become the authority not only for your blog but for your Twitter followers then you will be moved to the coveted must see column. This is done by sharing quality information.

That was the time constraint though for most. Finding quality information and then letting everybody that follows know about it without it becoming your be all end all. It is why I put together the Twitter Time Saver.

It shows the exact steps and how to automate most of them that I use to be able to easily share quality information with my followers. Your time is spent only as a filter to make sure you pass on quality information. That has lead to an increase in followers and visitors to my blogs.

The best part though is it only takes a few minutes, a few times a day to do this. When people get quality information they are likely to retweet it. That is the nature of Twitter. Each retweet gets your name in front of others that have no idea who you are but if the information is good and is coming from someone who is a credible source to that person already they tend to come follow you too.

It will snowball and will definitely increase your circle of influence. Check out the Twitter Time Saver and copy the methods to draw more visitors to your blog without wasting hours of your time.

Just got an email from Soren and John that they upgraded the Tweet My Blog plugin. More on the upgrade and doing it in a minute.

If you aren’t familiar with the plugin it allows you to pull your Twitter feed into your sidebar of your blog and it will also post your blog posts automatically to Twitter.

This is useful to spread the word and get more visitors for your blog and to get your blog visitors to follow you on Twitter.

After all the more conversations you have with your reader the better for both parties.

The Upgrade

Just log in to your Tweet My Blog account and click on the download link in the members area. Download the zip file and unzip it. Upload all the files and overwrite your existing install. That is all. It won’t effect your current settings and you won’t need to change anything in the dashboard.

Twitter

Just a note Twitter can be a great resource for getting more visitors not only for you blog but for any of your sites if used right. You can get more information on using Twitter effectively at The Twitter Effect.

If you are not following me on Twitter why not ;) ?

As always your question and comments are welcomed.

This is the second part of a series on Twitter and blogging. The first part talked about using Twitter and using it for building relationships.

Today I will discuss some of the tools I have found to improve your use of Twitter in relation to your blog and a couple that have been helpful for using Twitter.

First to integrate your Twitter feed on to your blog there area couple items you can use. Tweet My Blog will allow you to easily add your latest tweets to your sidebar. It will also send your latest blog post out as a tweet to your Twitter account.

A similar plugin with a few more features is Twitter Tools,. This will also allow you to use your tweets as blog posts. Either of these will allow you to automate the process and send tweets when you blog along with showing your tweets on your blog.

There is another tool that will allow you to auto post your blog posts to Twitter called Twitter Feed which will monitor your blog’s RSS feed and post to Twitter when it finds new information on a regularly scheduled basis. It also works with other services like identica.ca or Ping.fm.

There are a couple tools that will help you monitor and stay active with Twitter. The two that I have tried are Twhirl and TweetDeck. I am back using Twhirl as I have had trouble since the last Windows update with TweetDeck and my machine.

I really loved some of the utility of TweetDeck and thought it was easier to use but Twhirl will work until I have the time to find what is causing the problem.

Another plugin that allows you to add a place in your comments for people to leave their Twitter username called WP Twitip ID. This way you can find the people who are commenting on your blog and be able to strengthen the relationship through Twitter conversations too.

If you have other tools you have used and like feel free to leave a comment.

Today’s question:

I’ve only just set up my blog and installed wordpress 2.7 the help file in the tweet my blog plug in on how to install it looks like it was written for the old version. Do you know how to change the settings to add my twitter username etc to the plug in.

Tweet My Blog works the same on WordPress 2.7 as it did on earlier versions. The problem is that some of the nomenclature within the dash board has changed.

Here are the steps using the names in WordPress 2.7. You ftp up the plugin the same as before.

Click on plugins then activate the plugin.

Next click settings then Tweet My Blog. Fill in your information as in the directions and click update.

Here is where the change comes in now instead of clicking design which no longer exists click appearance – widgets. Then click add to the appropriate sidebar and drag it to where you want it to show on your blog.

Now click edit – add a title to the section and select the number of tweets to show. Click done and then click save changes.

The big change is that design is now called appearance.

Your comments and questions are always welcomed.

If you are blogging Twitter is a must. It incorporates quite well with any blog traffic strategy. Twitter is basically micro blogging. You can post as often as you want but have to keep your post to just 140 characters.

It makes you get your thoughts into a very compact format. This makes it perfect as a lead in to your blog and like all social media others blogs.

Now lets look at how you can get traffic for your blog from Twitter. As there are books written on all of the ways that you can use Twitter for promoting you we will stick primarily to promoting your blog.

First like all social media you need to be participating in the community not just promoting your blog. Otherwise you are nothing but a spammer and people will not continue to follow you and no one will see your message. Nuff said.

There are some tools that can help automate the posting for you. Tweet My Blog will automatically post to Twitter and also allow you to show your latest “tweets” on you blog in the sidebar. You can also use Twitter Feed which will automatically post when it monitors a change in your RSS feed. There are probably others but those are two that I have used.

You should also remember like bookmarking it does not hurt you to “tweet” about posts that you have commented on. All of these can bring you increased traffic and enlarge your circle of influence.

Like all social media it is a matter of being a good resource and not just promoting your items solely.

As always your questions and comments are welcomed.

If you are using Tweet My Blog make sure to download the new version. It solves the problem with editing your blog and having multiple tweets.

They also improved the appearance when Twitter goes down so you get a better dsiplay in your side bar.

If you are using Twitter and WordPress you need to check out Tweet My Blog.

Your comments and questions are always welcomed.

Before I start my rant let me say that I appreciate the effort put in by numerous developers creating plugins. They add a functionality that greatly enhances the usability and power of WordPress as a blogging platform. I will apologize in advance to those that continue to improve and support their work this is not aimed at those.

There is a problem though with the current structure of how people look at plugins especially in the non marketing world.

Often developers create a great plugin, get a lot of people using it and then just get plain bored with continuing the development of it.

Not sure why that happens but it does happen way too often. My guess is because it is done gratis and they don’t have a way to monetize it.

Yes, they may put up a donation button but that does not necessarily generate sufficient incentive to continue the development as WordPress evolves.

At the same time those that do create a plugin and add a monetization model are skewered for asking for an email or having an offer in their marketing process to give away a free plugin. Yes, they continue to market to those people but if they are ethical (and most are) you can unsubscribe easily. (Of course you then miss the updates.)

These developers despite being seen as the lowest in the world of plugin creators have a vested interest in keeping their plugin fully supported because it helps to fill their marketing funnel.

These plugins are changed and supported well unlike some of the ones that just depend on donations and get bored.

Truthfully I would rather deal with the marketer that has a vested interest in supporting and improving their plugin than with the person that creates a great plugin and has no reason other than kindness or ego to support it.

After seeing a new plugin with a marketing funnel be skewered for their marketing (not for the quality of the plugin) like Tweet My Blog has been at this post where it only focuses on the fact that it only works on WordPress (note it is WordPress plugin – duh), has a way to make money and does not look at the differences between what is on the market and what is not.

Plugins rarely do something that is unique but make doing it easier. If you can code and want to tweak your theme and the code you can (if you know how) or you can upload a plugin and click activate and add options if necessary. Something non tech heads can handle.

Yes I can add my Twitter feed to my sidebar with the proper code, I can use other services to post my RSS feed to Twitter (at a delayed time frame as they only check once an hour) and avoid the marketing.

Now my question to you is the fact that a developer adds a marketing funnel to their delivery of a free plugin enough to skewer them?

Or would you rather deal with someone that does it out of the goodness of their heart, ego or some other factor and then has no reason to support it in the future?

I know what my answer is but would love to hear yours.

You always here the buzz about Web 2.0 and for a reason – it works. Two of the things that work well together are Twitter and WordPress blogs.

I have been usnig the two together for a while. It can be time consuming as Twitter is like a mini blog but it is ever so effectiove at getting more readership to your blogs that it is worth the effort.

Today that effort just got cut appreciably. Tweet My Blog is a free WordPress plugin from Soren Jordansen and John Merrick. It will leverage your blog feed and Twitter automatically.

Now I have been using this for a few days and it ROCKS!

My Twitter followers are increasing at 3 times the rate they normally do.

I was using a different service to post from my feeds and because this is on the blog itself it posts my content much quicker than the other did.

Set it and forget it. Yep anything that can make me more active on Twitter without doing anything extra is huge. This is a must for any serious blogger and allows you to leverage your blog and Twitter to the advantage of both.

Go get Tweet My Blog.

By the way the plugin is totally free but you should take a close look at
the special offer they have in store for you when join. I instantly grabbed my own copy, and I know it will skyrocket my marketing power when using Twitter and Wordpress.

As always your questions and comments are welcomed.
