Twitter and blogging - get great additional traffic

If you are blogging Twitter is a must. It incorporates quite well with any blog traffic strategy. Twitter is basically micro blogging. You can post as often as you want but have to keep your post to just 140 characters.
It makes you get your thoughts into a very compact format. This makes it perfect as a lead in to your blog and like all social media others blogs.
Now lets look at how you can get traffic for your blog from Twitter. As there are books written on all of the ways that you can use Twitter for promoting you we will stick primarily to promoting your blog.
First like all social media you need to be participating in the community not just promoting your blog. Otherwise you are nothing but a spammer and people will not continue to follow you and no one will see your message. Nuff said.
There are some tools that can help automate the posting for you. Tweet My Blog will automatically post to Twitter and also allow you to show your latest “tweets” on you blog in the sidebar. You can also use Twitter Feed which will automatically post when it monitors a change in your RSS feed. There are probably others but those are two that I have used.
You should also remember like bookmarking it does not hurt you to “tweet” about posts that you have commented on. All of these can bring you increased traffic and enlarge your circle of influence.
Like all social media it is a matter of being a good resource and not just promoting your items solely.
As always your questions and comments are welcomed.

Hi Mike,
I really like automating things so I use Twitter Tools to do my automation. I tried TweetMyBlog but something changed and I wasn’t getting the feed any more.
Anyway, I agree that Twitter is a great way to get some extra traffic.

Mike,
Great info, as usual.
What I have found out about using twitter is that whoever you are ‘following’, you can find out ‘what’ they are doing just by logging in to your account and likewise if they are following you (which you would hope they would be :))
Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the update. Wondering do you use rotators on your WP sites? I notice your site is constantly changing with your free gifts and the location of your ads.
Maybe a post about rotators?
Thanks, I always learn from your blog.

Have you tried Twirl, Mike?
Since it lets you recieve and send Tweets right from your desktop, there’s no more running to Twitter to check the action - saves time and keeps you on top of it all.
I find it makes TweetMyBlog even better by not tying up time at Twitter, and that re-tweeting the url about 12 hours later keeps the traffic from Twitter flowing in.

Hi Mike,
Twitter is also a great training tool for writing headlines since you are limited to 140 characters.
Just like headlines, every letter has to count in Twitter.
Adios,
Jeff

Mike,
Just getting started with Twitter. Now, I have a number of blogs, not all the same topic, would you recommend keeping to one topic so that you don’t seem to be rambling all over the place and for it to be more business oriented?
Still trying to figure this ’social marketing’ thing out bit by bit.
Thanks,
Deanna

@Deanna -
Quite a few people on Twitter have different accounts for different interests. Like dave Taylor has one for his biz profile and another for his film reviews so depends on how closely the blogs are related.
