Using articles for blog traffic

By Mike | October 2, 2008

WordPress Made EAsy

Today we will start with the first of the items you can do to help generate backlinks and traffic to your blog - submitting articles. This is because we met the 5 comment rule and that will apply here too.

Submitting articles can be a very effective way to add backlinks. When people use your article they are required to keep your signature links. That is where you can add a targeted anchor text link to your blog.

Lets first talk about using articles generally. There are a number of sites like Ezine Articles, Article Base, et al that allow you to submit articles for others to use. They usually have requirements and this does need to be a content piece not a sales piece or most of the better sites will not accept your article. Always supply quality content whether you write it yourself or outsource it.

This gives you a chance to showcase your expertise and the key for you is that you do get to use the signature file for promotion not the actual article.

Now here are two ways that you can use that signature box. The first and most effective way is the two part article. This is a technique I learned from John Taylor in forums and repeated in his report Article Profit Formula which is a great guide for the price on using articles profitably.

John is a big proponent of the 2 part article. He submits part 1 to the directories and posts part 2 on this blog. He uses the signature file to send article readers to his blog for “the rest of the story”.

Example:

Article was titled “5 ways to grow better roses

John Smith has been an avid rose grower and writes regularly about tips and tricks for growing better roses. Check out “7 more ways to grow better roses.”

Hyperlink the title to the appropriate blog post with 7 more tips.

The other way is to just use the signature file to send people to your blog with a link using the proper anchor text you want for your backlink.

Example:

Article was titled “5 ways to grow better roses

John Smith has been an avid rose grower and writes regularly about tips and tricks for growing better roses. Check out his Growing Better Roses blog for more tips on growing roses.

Hyperlink the “growing roses” to a specific article on that topic.

Either of these techniques will both send new readers to your blog directly and create targeted backlinks from every site you submit it to and everyone that uses the article for content on their blog or newsletter.

Submit a couple articles a month and you will be amazed at the traffic and backlinks you can generate if you have good quality content in your articles and on your blog.

Remember that I need 5 comments to continue the series.

Thanks for the great tips Mike!

If you had only ONE resource to go to to learn about article writing, ezines and posting, what would it be?

    Thanks again.

Quality content is always the key whether it is articles, blog content or even how and what you add as comment.

The blog for EzineArticles has lots of great information about article marketing.

There are a couple of article challenges going on now. One is in the Warrior Forum, which may be over by now.

The Lieurance-King Fall 2008 Article Challenge is just starting up and is kicking off with a free teleseminar.

    Check out http://www.lkarticlechallenge.com for details.

The resource box has been used to promote the author ie biographical. Things have now changed and the resource box needs to flow just like its was a part of the article.
The link or links contained are best when directly related to the article. Many use the link to offer a free report by way of a squeeze page. This can help in list building. Creating this funnel allows subscribers to be personalized and creating value for marketing efforts. This is much more valuable than just a back link. You may have had to pay 25 cents per click or more otherwise.

    Thanks again Mike!,

I guess you didn’t really need my comment THIS time, since you already had your 5… But I really AM enjoying this series that you started and want to make sure that it continues.

    All the Best,

Thanks for the article, Mike. Looking forward to the next ones.

I agree with both you, Mike, and Leslie: both of those kinds of links are important and valuable. In fact, when I started sending people to opt-in boxes a lot, I noticed fewer people showing up at my blog after finding me with my favorite keyword, and my blog dropped off the first page of Google for that keyword. Not good.

So I published a few ezinearticles with that as an anchor link, and the numbers went right back up (not hugely, but the difference was definitely noticeable). Gotta keep on top of things ;-)

I do believe that collecting leads ia another very important function and very useful. So I try to do both, either putting both kinds of links in my resource box, or alternating. It helps to write more article so I have more to play with.

All best, and looking forward to your next round of WordPress Lessons!

    Elisabeth

As always your postings are full of golden nuggets. I do have a question. Sometime I write postings for my blog and want to refer back to a posting I have done before. Is it best to make a general comment and link back to the previous posting or better to just restate the information.?
    Cheers!

    @Tony Tezak -
Have not tested that but I would probably add the new information I wanted on that topic and link back to the previous post for more background information or something similar. Make sure to link it from a good anchor text on the topic.

Interlinks help but not as much as outside ones but the right anchor text will help you more than using something like for more info as your anchor text.
