Finally getting smarter - about time huh

Yes occasionally I have to keep hitting my head against the wall before things start to sink in. Each time WordPress releases a new version I play catch up checking my plugins and themes to see what works with it and what does not.
Well I actually decided that is plain dumb and decided that this Old Bald Guy really needs to smarten up a bit. (I know a huge shock)
So I decided instead of playing catch up I really should be testing things constantly and signed up to start using the beta versions. So now I am running the latest WordPress 2.7 on a separate install so I can test things ahead of time. Novel approach I know
.
So look for more info on the upcoming release and the back end will be a shock as it has changed completely. Not just a few changes and colors but a total new look.
After playing with it for a bit it will actually be much easier and intuitive. Now it has been a bit of shock as being old and bald I get used to things the way they are. After all I have spent years learning which button does what. But…
Do have to say that they are doing a great job on the new version and after the initial culture shock it will be much easier to use.
Look for more soon and as the roll out gets nearer look for a quick video walk through to get you prepared for the new look.
As always your questions and comments are welcomed.

Hi Mike,
Do we really need to upgrade Wordpress everytime there’s a new version? I installed the pluging to automatically upgrade Wordpress gave me some grief. I had to delete the most recent post in order to get it working again. I’m a newbie with Wordpress so I’ve decided as you suggest to play with Wordpress on another domain and test before implementing on my main site.
Thanks

That depends. I know not the answer you want to hear. Version changes like from 2.6.2 to 2.6.3 are usually because of security issues and should be upgraded asap.
What I am talking about is testing the new 2.7 which has not been released yet. There is not as big of a reason to rush to upgrade from the 2,6 series to a new series and despite beta testing constantly going on these usually are new feature changes.
So you should upgrade but it does not hurt to let the early adopters try the new versions and find the missed bugs first. Eventually you will want to upgrade though.

Hi Mike
keeping up to date with developments and upgrades is no easy task. No sooner do you upgrade, then pops up a plugin update. It can be just an out of date plugin that screws everything up and don’t I know it. Server upgrades don’t always help either.
Good luck with your testing.

But one of the nice features in 2.6 and beyond is that you know when the plugins are out of date as soon as you login and can easily upgrade them from the dashboard.

Mike,
I just jumped from 2.5 (default install if Fantastico in my cPanel) to 2.6.3 I did see the comments on the new backend and I was tempted. Main reason is that WP is relative new to me, so maybe better to get use to the new look before I get used to the old one. Years ago I started to use b2evolution (also a standard option in most Fantastico’s). Actually in general I did seems to create traffic easily (and still does). On some sites I use the multiple blog function very successful. What are the standard plug-in you should use to get more traffic to the blog. I put in the SEO one as well as the google sitemap. You have any other suggestions?
Fred
